At the heart of her practice is a simple belief: healing begins when people feel safe, deeply listened to, and truly cared for. With over 20 years of experience, she has walked alongside hundreds of people through their healing journeys—often during times of pain, uncertainty, or transition. She meets each person with gentleness and curiosity, creating space for the physical, emotional, and energetic layers of healing to unfold at their own pace. I’m so excited to be joining the Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab Centres team and am now accepting new patients!
My approach to care is grounded in teamwork, education, and helping people feel their best—whether that means recovering from an injury, improving mobility, or optimizing overall wellness. I completed a Bachelor of Physical Education, a Bachelor of Applied Health Science in Athletic Therapy and a Massage Therapy diploma. I have also taken various continuing education courses such as acupuncture, cupping, soft tissue release, manual therapy for pelvic health, and treatment techniques for TMJ dysfunction
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of individuals and athletes at recreational, provincial, and national levels in sports such as lacrosse, rugby, football, and wrestling. These experiences have shaped my holistic, hands-on approach to treatment.
As a mom of three little ones, life is busy. When we are not running our kids around to their various sports, I do try to take time to stay active myself, because I feel it’s important to practice what I preach. Both my husband and I grew up being involved in competitive sport, so physical activity is non-negotiable in our household. I enjoy running, walking, family bike rides, swimming, skating, and occasionally lifting weights.
I’m looking forward to meeting new patients, helping you achieve your goals, and being part of your health and recovery journey here at Cobblestone.

Let’s face it, finding the right therapist can feel a lot like online dating. Sifting through a sea of bios and photos, trying to get a sense of who will be the RIGHT FIT for your therapeutic journey. There are plenty of great therapists out there, and we all have something different to offer. You’re right to invest this much time and energy in finding the perfect match because the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors for your progress. In fact, studies show that a good therapist-client relationship can improve therapy outcomes by up to 30% (Norcross & Lambert, 2018). On that note, I have done my best to outline information about my practice to help you in your decision.
What You Can Expect From Our Sessions Together
Team Work
I believe that we are a team with the same goals (your goals). Think of us digging a
tunnel… exploring together: as the expert on your own life, you’ll hold the shovel and dig, while I
hold the light and guide the way. My view is that the therapeutic journey isn’t about changing who
you are but discovering more about yourself and then showing up in life in the way you really want
to.
Fun
While therapy can be serious and sometimes feel challenging, I also believe in having
some fun along the way. We’ll use different tools and methods, like Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Existential
Therapy, Mindfulness Based Therapy and even life coaching techniques. This variety
makes it possible to customize your therapeutic journey to you.
Practical and Useful
I believe therapy is a worthy investment that should be practical and helpful so you get
the sense that it’s worth your efforts (and money). You may even be surprised that the
the journey towards your goals might be shorter than you imagine.
What You Will Not Find from Our Sessions
No Diagnosing or Prescribing Medications
I don’t provide diagnoses or prescribe medications. You’re welcome to bring in any
diagnoses or use such terminology if it’s helpful for you, but my role doesn’t involve
using medication to treat clients. Many people find medication beneficial, but prescribing
it is not a part of my practice.
No Couches Here
Contrary to popular media portrayals, therapy with me does not involve lying on a
couch. We sit in chairs, and sometimes even move around. Going for walks outside is
also an option.
Not Just for Crisis
Therapy isn’t only for crises or severe mental health issues. It can be beneficial for
personal growth, managing stress, improving relationships, and more.
Not Just Talking
While talking is an important part of therapy, it’s not the only component. Therapy often
involves a variety of techniques and activities designed to help you develop skills and
insights.
Non Judgmental
We are all human. Our sessions will be held in a safe, non-judgmental space; you will never be
criticized or judged for your feelings, thoughts, or behaviors. The goal is to provide support and
understanding.
Not One-Size-Fits-All
There is no single approach to therapy that works for everyone. Sessions are
customized to fit your individual needs and preferences, which means we may use
different techniques and terminologies that work for you.
What Makes Me the Right Fit for Your Therapeutic Journey?
Education
I hold two Master’s degrees: the first with a focus on Adult Learning and the second in
Counselling Psychology. Additionally, I hold a diploma in Respiratory Therapy. This
“mixed” academic background supports my practical experience in helping others.
Experience
With 20 years experience in healthcare and education, I bring a diverse background to
my work as a psychotherapist. Starting as a Respiratory Therapist, I’ve worked in
hospitals, homes, and classrooms, learning to understand and adapt to different
cultures. I’ve also trained healthcare teams internationally and managed hospital
operations abroad. Now, as a psychotherapist, I blend my clinical skills with cultural
awareness to better support my clients. My journey has taught me to empathize and
connect with people from all walks of life, making me uniquely equipped to help others
in today’s globalized world.
Interests
I’m a bit of a nerd, and am passionate about continuous learning, particularly in the
areas of the mind-body connection, neuroscience, all things wellness, and mental
health. This drive allows me to continually expand my skill set and knowledge, providing
a wide range of resources to support my clients.
Personal Approach
I offer a compassionate and holistic approach to therapy, understanding that each
person’s journey is unique. My diverse background allows me to remain curious and
open to different perspectives, experiences, and values, creating a supportive
environment for clients to explore their emotions safely.
Who Do I Work With?
I love working with people from all walks of life, and sometimes it;s hard to specify the
exact types of clients I work with since I open to tackling a variety of challenges and
goals. However, it can be helpful to understand where my experience lies:
Age Range
I work exclusively with adults and teenagers, with age 12 being the youngest. I
consider. My primary experience is with adults aged 18 and older.
Types of Challenges
I address a wide range of emotional and mental health challenges, including but not
limited to:
Parenting Challenges
Postpartum Challenges
Anxiety and Depression
Grief and Loss
Life Transitions (such as moving, job loss, divorce, or relationship breakdown)
Self-Esteem and Self-Worth Issues
Body Image Concerns
Adults with Childhood Pain and Suffering
Mild to Moderate Traumatic Experiences
A Special Note on Couples/Relationship Work
As humans, we are biologically wired for connection, and we are each deeply affected by those around us. One of my passions is working with people in who are experiencing challenges, complications, or roadblocks in relationships. Whether you are navigating the complexities of a romantic relationship, familial bonds, or friendships, I am here to help. Relationship work is one of my passions, weather its working with all the members of the relationship or an individual who wants to experience relationship differently, I believe relationship
work can often provide a space for significant progress.
I look forward to our work
together!

Being a kid is hard, it can’t be compared to previous generations anymore because, whether we like it or not, things have changed. Kids often face a lot of challenges that might seem small to adults but feel huge to them. There are pressures from school, friends, and family. It’s a time of big emotions and changes, and it’s not always easy to navigate. Teenagers are expected to know what they want to do with their lives rather than being able to focus on who they want to be as a person. Parents are supposed to know how to grow and support these kids when they weren’t necessarily given the proper tools.
The social expectations on parents make things so exhausting. It’s challenging enough trying to guide kids through all the milestones but teaching children about emotion regulation can be even more difficult when parents themselves have struggled with their own emotions or trauma. together we can turn this into an opportunity for growth and healing for both parent and child.
I work directly with children to learn about their own emotional responses I work with children and parents together to learn new ways to communicate needs, I work with teenagers to figure out why things seem so big, and I also work with adults who have experienced difficult childhoods that continue to effect their identities and view of their self.
Being a kid is hard, it can’t be compared to previous generations anymore because, whether we lik...

Clarissa James (RSW, MSW, BSW, BA) is a compassionate and client-centered therapist specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and trauma for adults and youth (ages 14+). Clarissa is a Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) Practitioner, certified by the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center, and is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. She is the only Pain Reprocessing Therapy Practitioner in Brant County, and one of just eight mental health professionals with advanced PRT training in Ontario. Clarissa is the founder and owner of Chickadee Therapy.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)
Pain Reprocessing Therapy is a scientifically supported, mind-body approach designed to treat chronic pain that originates from the brain and nervous system—rather than from ongoing tissue damage or structural injury. This type of pain is often called neuroplastic pain. While the pain is very real, it is the result of a hypersensitive or misfiring pain system in the brain.
PRT helps clients retrain the brain to interpret bodily signals more accurately and reduce the threat response that fuels chronic pain. This is done through education, somatic (body-based) awareness, and emotional processing. The goal is to rewire the brain’s response to pain, allowing people to break free from persistent pain cycles and return to the activities they value.
Neuroplastic pain is much more common than people realize. Research suggests that a large percentage of chronic pain cases are neuroplastic in nature, meaning the pain is generated or amplified by the brain and nervous system—not necessarily due to ongoing physical damage. Some common conditions PRT can help with include:
Chronic back or neck pain
Fibromyalgia
Headache disorders and migraines
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)
Pelvic pain
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Sciatica (without significant structural cause)
Tinnitus
PRT is not a replacement for medical care in cases of clear tissue damage or active medical conditions. However, when pain persists beyond expected healing time or when no clear medical explanation can be found, PRT can be a life-changing part of recovery. Clarissa is proud to be part of a collaborative team at Cobblestone Medicine and Rehab, where interdisciplinary care is prioritized to best support each client’s needs.
Clarissa’s personal experience with chronic migraine, which she was able to successfully treat using PRT, deeply informs her work. Her healing journey inspired her to specialize in treating chronic pain with compassion, insight, and a commitment to cutting-edge, evidence-based care.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
Clarissa also offers EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy—an extensively researched, evidence-based approach for treating trauma and emotional distress. EMDR helps people process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge, often leading to significant relief from symptoms of trauma, including post-traumatic stress.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to help the brain reprocess distressing experiences and integrate them more adaptively. This supports the brain and body in re-establishing safety, calming the nervous system, and promoting lasting emotional resilience.
Clarissa integrates EMDR into her trauma work with both adults and adolescents (14+), drawing on its powerful ability to support nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and the resolution of stuck trauma responses. EMDR also complements her work with chronic pain, as unresolved trauma and persistent pain are often deeply interconnected.
